I translated a piece about St Hilarion Troitsky the New Martyr on VFR, and these illustrations of modern Russian churches came to mind. There are many new churches throughout Russia… some dedicated to new saints, some to the old standbys. So, here’s a representative selection. It’s the largest single church in Orthodoxy… it’s the Mother Church of all Russian Orthodox Christians… blown up in 1931, replaced by a swimming pool, it was rebuilt in the 90s. A fitting ending to this montage, no?

A Window Into a Lost World 6: The People of Tsarist Russia

This appears to have been taken at the turn of the 20th century, in the studio of A. Vedernikov in Yekaterinburg. It seems to be a father-and-son pair of the merchant class. Were they in trade or did they run a hotel or were they skilled craftsmen with their own shop, with assistants and apprentices? There is no doubt that they either fled with the White armies or were repressed by the Reds. They were “socially unfriendly” elements, after all…
