Natan Altman. A Portrait of Anna Akhmatova. 1914
A Portrait of Anna Akhmatova (Natan Altman, 1914)
This is the best-known of Altman’s work, as it depicts the famous poetess Anna Akhmatova (1888-1965). She somehow escaped the camps, but, her first husband was executed and her son was imprisoned. She was forbidden to publish after 1925, but, her poetry circulated in samizdat. Her most-known work is the epic poem cycle, Requiem (1935-40).
