Serbia: Russia Loves You!

Filed under: Christian, Orthodox, Pop music, Russian, Serbia, folk music, historical, religious, vocal — 01varvara @ 1330

Russians and Serbians have always been allies and friends. We are united by our common Orthodox Faith, and there is no Russian alive who does not support our Serbian kin without reservation. Kosovo je Srbija!

Russian Folk Song. Выйду ночью в поле с конём. I Shall Leave for the Field Tonight on My Horse. Peresvet Male Chamber Chorus

Filed under: 19th century, Cossack, Russian, art music, choral, folk music, vocal — 01varvara @ 1330

A beautiful folk song sung by the Peresvet Male Chamber Chorus. The first 35 seconds feature the soloist singing alone, unaccompanied, then the chorus gradually breaks into full harmony. This video is of a live performance in April 2008 in Podolsk, the soloist is Vladislav Kosaryov. Get a load of those LOW Russian basses! Dreamy…

Noch Tikha. Quiet Night. Russian kolyadka

One of our Russian kolyadki is matched with contemporary photos of Orthodox Chrisitians at prayer and feasting. My intent was to “enflesh” Orthodox life, both our worship and our celebrations. The final image is “The Nativity of Christ” by the contemporary Russian artist Pavel Popov. The first image is the cathedral at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville NY during the winter Christmas season.

Nebo i Zemlya. Heaven and Earth. Russian kolyadka

This is one of the kolyadki (carols) for Christmas. The St Nicholas Cathedral Children’s Choir in Mozhaisk sings it accompanied by Orthodox icons of the Birth of Christ. The final image is the famous version painted by St Andrei Rublyov.

To forestall spam by nationalist extremists, the kolyadki migrated from Little Russia all over the Empire, and they are now a precious heritage of all Orthodox Russians. In any case, this choir is Russian, and it was recorded in Russia. Isn’t it sad that I must include such a caveat for such a beautiful song about a meaningful feast?

Walking to Church with Vladimir Buzin. song: Françoise Hardy

Filed under: Impressionist, Orthodox, Russian, fine art, folk music, urban scene, vocal — 01varvara @ 1330

The neo-Impressionist art of the contemporary Russian painter Vladimir Buzin combines with an old American standard, Suzanne, by Leonard Cohen sung by Françoise Hardy in French. Another one of those combinations that works better than it sounds!

Moya Rossiya. Ural Folk Choir

Filed under: Russian, domestic, early modern, fine art, folk music, human study, portrait — 01varvara @ 1330

A pretty song from one of the folk choirs is combined with the artwork of Zinaida Serebyakova. She is my favourite artist… may her memory be eternal! She painted all the Russian people (both peasants and nobles) with honesty and love. There were (and are) few like her.

In a Peasant Izba (Music by Boris Grebeshnikov)

The turn of the 20th century art of Ivan Kulikov is combined with the work of the contemporary Russian singer/songwriter Boris Gresbeshnikov. His song, My Little Loom seems to suit the peasant-themed paintings of Kulikov perfectly.

I found some wonderful videos of this excellent regional chorus, and I truly must share them with you.
