The Prose of Life (Vasili Baksheyev, 1893)

One can feel the tension between the father and the daughter in this painting. What caused it? Who caused it? Was it the father or the the daughter, or, was it both of them? Somehow, it is not something clear-cut… it’s just the prose of life.

The Down-at-Luck at Dinner (Vasili Baksheyev, 1901)

What happened? They obviously were better-off in the past. They still have a few good things, but, most have gone to the pawnbroker. It is an apposite work for the present crisis. Shall we manage as well?
